Winestrand Ballyferriter is the major village in the Gaeltacht area, the Irish language is strong here, as are the traditions of music, literature and sport. It offers panoramic views of the sea, mountain and islands, with unique birds, plants and an unspoiled beach. The area also has one of the greatest concentrations of Celtic ruins in Ireland.
Fridays at the nearby Tigh Bhric boast an entertaining night of traditional music. Besides an excellent pub, also available here is a fine restaurant, shop, and off license. More shops, pubs and amenities are present in the centre of Ballyferriter (5mins walk). Although situated in the heart of the beautiful countryside, Winestrand is only 12km from Dingle.
Dingle has an abundance of modern shops and artisan markets. The Restaurants of Dingle are world famous, as are the Pubs which are long established with traditional music, and provide a fantastic opportunity to meet the people and absorb the culture intimately.
Since 1983 Fungie, a wild Bottlenose Dolphin, choose to make Dingle Harbour his home. Boats leave Dingle pier all day, every day, all the year round to see Fungie, wild and free in his natural habitat. Ryan's Daughter (Robert Mitchum) was filmed here on the peninsula, as were parts of Far and Away (Tom Cruise).
