Archaeological Sites

The Great Blasket Island, 3 miles west of the tip of the Dingle Peninsula (visitors can travel by ferry), is renowned for its history, culture and literature. Uninhabited today, but a wildly beautiful place.

Gallarus Oratory, around 1300 years old, this example of dry stone masonry was built by early Christians and now also houses a visitors centre.

Caherdargan, stone fort and homestead.

Dunbeg, remains of an elaborate stone fortress, slowly slipping into the sea. Recent excavations produced materials dating from 400BC.

Kilmalkeader, 12 century Hiberno-Romanesque Church, with examples of the ancient Irish alphabet.

Rahinane, 15th Century Norman Tower House.

Tours
Archaeological Tours are available like those being offered by 'Sciuird' and are designed to give an insight into the people and places of this region over the past 6000 years. Pickups are available and booking is recommended.
'Slea Head Tours' Guided tours encompass all the major sites of the area, along with places of interest including the locations used in the filming of "Ryan's Daughter" and 'Far And Away'.
